After the December 2018 revolution and the subsequent political change the has taken place in the country? and imminent departure of ?UNAMID and arrival of the Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) which entails transition from peacekeeping to peacebuilding; a stronger engagement with local government institutions becomes imperative, because they are the closest public institution to local communities as well as the responsible body for basic service delivery, local development and local peace processes. Therefore, this project proposes the following interventions:

  1. Enhancing the capacity of local governments through training and actual local development planning based on assessment of rights-holders’ needs.
  2. Support designing and formulation of states development plans through forming teams of national development planning officers’ with multidisciplinary backgrounds, such as development specialists, legal officers, environmental specialist, conflict prevention expert as well as gender specialists. This includes, support to governance mechanisms for SDGs localization, including capacities for SDGs-based local development planning
  3. Support local governments’ capacity to manage financial resources, develop and implement local government plans. This would include the public-private partnerships, revolving funds, performance-based resource allocations and revenue collection mechanisms.

Assist in collecting and analyzing data on the implementation of UNDP mandate on Governance and human rights in Sudan.

  •  Assist in monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation in assigned duty station in Darfur.
  • Assist in organizing and participating in scoping missions, meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  •  Assist in collecting and analyzing human rights indicators, including gender-specific indicators.
  • Assist in drafting correspondence and mainstreaming human rights issues into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programme
  •  Contribute to the design and production of publications, branding and visibility items for the unit; and Attends meetings and prepares summaries of the proceedings.
  •  Assist in the logistics and administrative aspects of projects assigned by supervisor.
  •  Support other program related activities

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b)?above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.?

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Experience, Areas of Expertise:

Education: University degree in International relations, Human Rights, or relevant discipline.
Interest: Interest in understanding the UNDP way of work and programming principles.
Language Requirements: Fluency in both oral and written English and Arabic.

Internship Conditions:

• UNDP will provide a stipend in the amount of USD 202.35 monthly in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity;

• UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

• Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

• Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;

• Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;

  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;

• Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;

• Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.
